Digital Projects
Shortly after arriving to New York in 1940, Roman Vishniac began sharing the images he took in Central and Eastern Europe with the American public. The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research hosted two exhibitions in New York: “Pictures of Jewish Life in Prewar Poland (1944)” and “Jewish Life in the Carpathians (1945).”
Vishniac’s photographic prints, dry mounted on cardboard, were identified by titles, locations, and dates, handwritten on the mounts in Yiddish and English.
As part of a series of four digital displays showcasing the Roman Vishniac Archive , this slideshow premiered at In Focus. Roman Vishniac: 1922-2022 on May 1, 2022 and is on display in The Magnes auditorium.
