
Join the Magnes and New Lehrhaus at BAMPFA for a screening of the landmark documentary Outside Freud, written, directed, and produced by Yair Qedar. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker; distinguished expert Dr. Harriet Wolfe, immediate past president of the International Psychoanalytical Association; and New Lehrhaus’ executive director, Robby Adler Peckerar, Ph.D.

Through an intimate lens, the film reveals new dimensions of Freud’s legacy, focusing on being an outsider. Combining animation, dreams, and insights from historians and psychoanalysts, the film explores Freud’s experiences of marginalization as a Jew in Vienna.
Co-presented by BAMPFA , New Lehrhaus, and the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, with support from the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation and the Austrian Consulate, San Francisco.

Yair Qedar is an Israeli documentary filmmaker, social activist, and former journalist. His project The Hebrews, chronicles the lives and literary works of Jewish and Israeli figures of the modern Hebrew and Jewish literary and intellectual canon. Qedar is also a leading LGBTQ activist, who created several Queer films and the first Israeli LGBTQ newspaper.
Harriet Wolfe, MD, is a psychoanalyst, President of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and Clinical Professor at UC San Francisco.
Robby Adler Peckerar is Executive Director of New Lehrhaus. As a former professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, he taught courses on Freud and his circle, fin de siècle Austro-Hungarian culture, and topics in European Jewish literature.
