Join us for an exciting discussion about the rescue of Jewish cultural property looted by the Nazis across Europe, centering upon the photographs and letters (1945-1946) of Koppel Pinson kept in The Magnes Collection.
Nazi era looted books and other items were processed after WWII at the Offenbach Archival Depot. The mission of the U.S. Monuments Men working in this depot was to return plundered objects to their rightful owners. Koppel S. Pinson (1904-1961), former Educational Director of the American Joint Distribution Committee for Germany, worked at this depot to distribute books to Jewish survivors in Displaced Persons’ camps in Germany after the war. As of August 1947 approximately 2,000,000 books and other objects had been restituted and distributed from Offenbach.
This talk will be given by Carla Shapreau, a member of the Berkeley Law faculty and a research associate at the Institute of European Studies at Berkeley.
Photographs taken by Pinson during his two-year tenure were donated to the Magnes by his widow in 1991, and will be on display during the presentation.
