PopUp Exhibition | Freud’s Moses: Between Anti-Semitism and Assimilation

The debate about Sigmund Freud’s ambivalent relationship with Judaism found new inspiration in the last few decades through a wave of new publications that focus on Freud’s last work,Moses and Monotheism (1939). Dr. Sharvit’s lecture will instead concentrate on an earlier essay by  Freud, The Moses of Michelangelo (1914). In this work, initially published anonymously, Freud allegedly attempted to suggest a new psychoanalytic theory of art, but in essence he expressed his growing concerns regarding anti-Semitism in Europe. The lecture will be complemented by a portrait of Freud by Irving Amen (1960) and by Chagall’s famous 1931 painting of Moses breaking the Tablets of the Law. Gilad Sharvit is the Helen Diller Postdoctoral Fellow in Jewish Studies at UC Berkeley.

Each week, UC Berkeley faculty and students, visiting artists and other notable guests present brief lectures focused on selected treasures from the The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. One speaker and one object at the time, these “flash” exhibitions include the opportunity to view the art and artifacts discussed intimately and up close.
