PopUp Exhibition | Tom Laqueur on Museums and the Construction of Narrative

Apr 22, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

wjhc1977-016_1

Creating a good exhibition generally depends on the ability of the curator and the museum staff to tell a good story. What is needed is not so much a variety of interesting objects as a definite focus on narrative, with which the audience can interact. Join Professor Thomas W. Laqueur (Helen Fawcett Professor of History, Berkeley) in discussing the challenges that museums face today in telling and preserving narratives. On display will be several objects showcasing the breadth of The Magnes Collection, including  a 2500-year-old coin and a glass vessel from Ancient Judaea; a basketball jersey from Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo (California); a painting by Sarah Samuels Stein, Gertrude Stein’s sister-in-law, a student of Henri Matisse and an avid collector of Matisse’s work.

About the PopUp Exhibition Series

Each week, UC Berkeley faculty and students, visiting artists and other notable guests present brief lectures focused on selected treasures from the The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. One speaker and one object at the time, these “flash” exhibitions include the opportunity to view the art and artifacts discussed intimately and up close.

Bring your own lunch, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and take part in an exciting learning program, free and open to the public. Close-up view of collections included.
