PopUp Exhibition | Rabbi James Brandt on the Magic of Hanukkah

Celebrate the magic of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, at the Magnes Collection! Join Rabbi James Brandt for an exploration of the meaning of Hanukkah today. Rabbi Brandt is the CEO of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation of the East Bay. He joined the Federation in 2003 and became its Executive Director in June 2009. Rabbi Brandt studied environmental design at Berkeley and earned a master’s degree in architecture from MIT prior to receiving rabbinical ordination from Hebrew Union College and becoming the first full-time rabbi at Congregation Beth Sholom in Napa. His presentation will be structured around Hanukkah lamps in the Magnes Collection, with specific emphasis on a brass lamp manufactured in Germany or the Netherlands in the late 18th century. This lamp — which the Magnes purchased as part of the Siegfried S. Strauss Collection in 1967 — was likely used for lighting Hanukkah candles in a synagogue.
About the PopUp Exhibition Series
Each week, UC Berkeley faculty and students, visiting artists and other notable guests present brief lectures focused on selected treasures from the The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. One speaker and one object at the time, these “flash” exhibitions include the opportunity to view the art and artifacts discussed intimately and up close.
